UNIVERSITY COURSES TAUGHT 

BAYLOR UNIVERSITY 

THEA 1415 – Voice and Movement Techniques: Acting I 

Introduced freshman level students to techniques of vocal production with an emphasis on body movement for the actor. Techniques taught included the Alexander Technique, Kristin Linklater Methods, Laban, and Animal Movement. Improvisation and individual group exercises served to support vocal exploration as well as defined approach to creating the physical life of a character. Primary textbook: Freeing the Voice by Kristin Linklater. Supplemental text: The Courage to Create by Rollo May. Re-created the syllabus and class format in its entirety. 

THEA 2299 – Theatre Dance II 

Placed emphasis on vocabulary, history of dance, technique of styles, and character development through dance to sophomore level students. Dance audition etiquette taught through a mock audition format. Students applied tap, jazz and ballet vocabulary and techniques to choreography projects that were required. Primary textbook: Jump into Jazz by Pryor and Kraines.  Re-created the syllabus and class format in its entirety. 

THEA 4298 – Theatre Dance IV 

Instructed senior level students in the foundations of Elizabethan, Restoration and Victorian period styles, dance and fan language work. Focus given to connection of character objective and obstacle when performing a contemporary or classical dance piece. Primary textbook: The Six Questions: Acting Technique for Dance Performance by Daniel Nagrim. Re-created the syllabus and class format in its entirety. 

THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA 

THEA 205 – Voice and Movement 

Guided sophomore BFA acting candidates through the practice of good vocal health, and freeing the voice through daily Linklater Technique warm-ups. Emphasis placed on relaxation, breathing, and sounding on breath. Articulation, resonation and placement of sound underscored the International Phonetic Alphabet. Animal work used to connect physical movement, vocal production and actor objective. Prepared students for end of the year departmental audition. Primary textbook: Speaking Clearly by Modisett and Luter. 

THEA 149 – Acting I 

Introduced freshman BFA acting candidates to concepts of relaxation, concentration, and the importance of using physical action verbs to obtain an objective and overcome an obstacle. Assisted students in the application of play and character analysis. Created weekly lesson plans and outlines for all chapters in Acting is Believing by Charles McGaw and evaluated student progress through quizzes, imaginary circumstance exercises and scene study. 

THEA 100 – Introduction to Acting 

Presented the basics of acting to non-acting majors with acting games, improvisation, and trust exercises. Sensory focus presented using tools of observation, environmental connections, impulse driven choices justified by given circumstances. Basic communication skills taught through pantomime and monologue techniques. Scene work projects allowed students to act and react in the moment. Primary textbook: Barton’s Onstage and Off. 

ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY 

THEA 114 – Recruiting Practicum 

Provided hands-on instruction exposing students to the daily rigors of University Student Recruiting. Students received tools in order to improve verbal and written skills as they interacted with prospective students. Interpersonal and social skills developed as students received instruction on how to conduct interviews with parents and prospective students. Students additionally experienced preparation lessons in order to guide departmental tours and provide important insight into the history of the school institution. 

THEA 137 – PR/Recruiting

Revamped Practicum Recruiting to add a PR aspect including social media, video/in-person previews, posters, and production paper/digital program support. Students coordinate our prospective student online program, Getacceptd.com, partner with the Chair and Fine Arts Coordinator for tours and in person or zoom auditions. 

THEA 138 – Performance 

Students are given credit for a leading or featured role in a MainStage Production as part of the academic season. Character Analysis and Beat book Technique reviewed and evaluated.

THEA 221 – Jazz Dance Technique 

Jazz Dance Technique was an introductory class focused on the development of coordination, flexibility, musicality, style and foundations of jazz. The class was broken down into four styles: Traditional, Musical Theatre, Lyrical and Fosse. Emphasis was placed on vocabulary, jazz history and an appreciation of past and present choreographers. Primary text reference: Jump into Jazz by Minda Goodman Kraines and Esther Pryor.

 

THEA 222 – Ballet Technique 

This beginning level ballet technique course placed an emphasis on the building of balance, strength, coordination and alignment. Each class began with a barre warm up which focused on placement and strength. Class structures included a foundational centre floor adagio combination, centre jumps, across the floor jetes/jump variations and a final centre combination. Primary text reference: A Dictionary of Ballet Terms by Leo Kersley and Janet Sinclair. 

THEA 223 – Tap Technique 

This was a practical class for developing the performer’s technique in tap dancing for the musical theatre stage. Clogging, musical theatre tap, hoofing styles, and improvisatory movement underscored styles of technique. Students were each required to present a research presentation on a specific history of tapping. In particular, students were expected to research a tap dance choreographer and present it in oral presentation form. 

THEA 224 – Modern Dance Technique 

Modern Technique focus was on alignment, musicality, improvisation, movement qualities, spatial patterns and storytelling through dance. Lectures presented on founders of modern dance such as Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. Video footage presented historical archived modern choreography. Primary technique style utilized was Lester Horton. Primary Text: The Dancer Prepares: Modern Dance for Beginners by James Penrod and Janice Gudde Plastino. 

THEA 226 – Beginning Acting for Non-Majors 

Offered approaches to the basics of acting. Focused on the playing of action, moment-to-moment choices were underscored. Emphasis placed on stage blocking, physical body positions as they relate to the stage, and acting vocabulary. Introductory techniques presented focusing on creation of character through given circumstances within a play text. Experimental learning through goal specific exercises, improvisation and directorial feedback was the primary format of this course. Written character analysis, beat books, quizzes, and journal writing was required. Primary Textbook: Acting One by Robert Cohen. 

THEA 320 – Voice and Diction 

Taught breath support, vocal placement, resonation, articulation, and an understanding of the phonetic alphabet as it applied to the creation of dialect work. Written IPA transcription, phonetic worksheets, quizzes, character analysis, scene score, and beat book were all used in support. Through professional recording contacts students recorded commercial demo and performance reels. Required text: Freeing the Natural Voice by Kristin Linklater and Good Speech for the American Actor by Edith Skinner. 

THEA 321 – Movement for the Stage 

Incorporated an introduction to Alexander Technique and self-assessment of alignment, center, natural tempo and physical connection to environment. Neutral Masks helped students explore physically without being reliant on facial expressions. Abstract poetry exploration as it applied to Michael Chekhov’s Physical Gestures allowed students to connect to internal emotional landscape. Animal Technique, Laban Exploration and Comedia Del Arte Style work were included. Note: This class was revamped in Fall of 2012. The Viewpoints Book text by Anne Bogart and Tina Howe was introduced. 

THEA 325 – Intermediate Acting 

This course offered an approach to modern realism focused on the playing of internal action through active physical action. Emphasis placed on sensory detail in the imaginative life through sense and emotional recall. The creation of moment-to-moment truth, subtext and transference techniques were incorporated. Uta Hagen’s Six Questions informed character analysis written work. Given circumstances, action/intention choices, obstacle, expectations were all elements given focus. Primary Textbook: A Challenge for the Actor by Uta Hagen. 

THEA 350 – Period Styles 

Period Manners, movement, gesturing, fan language and dance technique were presented as they applied to appropriate historical requirements for the Greek, Elizabethan, Restoration and Victorian periods. Discussions and activities framed Period Style Projects covering social attitudes, environment, manners, music and dance. Playwrights representing each of the four historical periods guided reference and discussion. A guest speaker presented background on attire, history, religion or language as a means of introduction for each area of study. Primary Textbook: Style for Actors by Robert Barton. 

THEA 400 – Advanced Studies in Movement 

This advanced course of movement incorporated Delsarte Technique, basic Ballet Technique, Restoration and Elizabethan Style Movement. This course qualified as a guided study for a senior level student. Primary Textbook: Moving from Within by Alma M. Hawkins. 

THEA 401 – Advanced Tap Dance Technique 

Created and approved in Fall 2012, this class was geared for the more advanced tapper. Precision, detail, and the rate of speed at which the student memorized combinations was a focus. Provided advanced training in tap dance technique for the musical theatre. Emphasis was placed on rhythm, musicality, syncopation, execution of steps and style as it applies to professional auditioning and performing. 

THEA 402 – Advanced Jazz Dance Technique 

Advanced Jazz was created and approved in Spring of 2011. This course provides advanced training in jazz dance technique for the musical theatre. Emphasis was placed on placement, fluidity, musicality, execution of steps and style as it applies to professional auditioning and performing. 

THEA 403 – Advanced Ballet Dance Technique 

Advanced Ballet was created and approved in Spring of 2011. This course provides advanced training in ballet dance technique for the musical theatre. Emphasis was placed on alignment, placement, fluidity, execution of steps and style as it applies to professional auditioning and performing. 

THEA 404 – Advanced Modern Dance Technique 

Advanced Modern Dance Technique was created and approved in Spring of 2011. This course provides advanced training in modern dance technique for the musical theatre. Emphasis will be placed on abstract and structured movement incorporating alignment, fluidity, execution of steps and style as it applies to professional auditioning and performing. 

THEA 425/440 – Advanced Dance Auditioning Technique

Advanced Dance Auditioning Technique was approved in 2012 for the Musical Theatre and later became required for Dance Track students. Provides advanced training in dance auditioning technique for the musical theatre. Emphasis was placed on rhythm, musicality, fluidity, balance, alignment, style and execution of steps as it applies to professional auditioning and performing. 

THEA 454 – Beginning Directing 

This course provided basic principles in governing play structures. Casting techniques were overviewed in the course study. Student directed scenes with a lab were expected. Students explored paper blocking and organic blocking. Primary Textbooks: Play Directing by Frances Hodge, Play Director’s Survival Kit by James W. and Wanda C. Rogers and Tips - Ideas for Directors by Jon Jory. 

THEA 456 – Auditioning Technique 

This course allows the advanced student to fine tune auditioning technique. The course covers entrance, slate and exit, auditioning material including music and dance approaches. Students worked in a film studio working with commercial copy and worked through cold reading and prepared monologue and scene work. Information on gaining representation, theatrical unions, headshots and coaches was covered. 

THEA 470 – Advanced Directing 

This class was restructured and new text book chosen. Students read The Empty Space by Peter Brook, presented director presentations and directed four pieces including a period piece and theatre of the absurd. Students created film or stage interpretations of Copenhagen and presented a Red Carpet Event as collaboration with the English Department. 

OTHER TEACHING EXPERIENCE 

ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY 

Invited by Theatre Department Chair, Adam Hester to instruct choreography seminar for students in his Musical Theatre Directing class.

Guided small group through six-week ballroom intensive. Focus included foxtrot, waltz and lindy hop. 

Instructed professor of bible in the basic dance styles of country dancing and waltz techniques. Focus included discussion of basic dance vocabulary, instruction of balance, rhythm and timing. 

Invited by Theatre Department Chair, Adam Hester to teach Auditioning Techniques and Advanced Acting Shakespeare for two weeks. Adam was guest directing in Atlanta. Coordinated with Communications department to gain access to film studio. Students experienced hands on instruction with teleprompters and cameras for commercial work. 

Circle in the Square – Tap I – NYC

Circle in the Square, a two-year musical theatre program connected to The Round About Broadway Stage Company, offers certificates in acting or musical theatre. I substitute taught for the Summer Musical Theatre Intensive program. University level students admitted only through audition and travel from all over the United States to study in this NYC program. Focus placed on rhythm, counting, basic vocabulary and execution of steps. Tap combinations taught to incorporate style, flexibility and musical timing. 

Kingsley Studios – Tap for Beginners – NYC 

Taught beginner tap classes to college age adults. Emphasis placed on basic execution of steps, vocabulary and timing with music. 

Studio B – Eastchester, NY 

This competitive dance studio has over 900 students with 10-12 professional dance instructors commuting from NYC to teach each year. Instructed technique classes and created choreography for company and pre-company recitals and performances for three years. 

Broadway Dance Studio – Astoria-Queens, NY 

Taught for one year at this 40 year old institution. Instructed tap and jazz to pre- company kids ages 11-13. Instructed tap and jazz to advanced company students ages 17-21. Instructed intermediate and advanced students in traditional jazz and hip-hop styles. 

Astoria Dance Center – Astoria-Queens, NY 

Directed and choreographed Astoria Dance Center’s Summer Production, Once On This Island. Consistently substitute taught musical theatre dance, jazz, hip- hop and tap for two years at this award winning NY studio. 

Walter Shalk School of Dance – Darien, CT 

Created original choreography for students aged 12-17. Instructed jazz and musical theatre styles for this same age group. 

Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival – Durant, OK 

Introduced children and teens ages 4-20 to the basics of dance, motivation of character through dance and musical theatre techniques. Choreographed and staged the children’s musical, When the Hippos Crashed the Dance and choreographed a teen showcase, Young Actor’s Studio, including creating an original dance poetry piece. 

Creative Arts Theatre & School – Arlington, TX 

Director of Marketing and Public Relations for theatre and school. Responsible for marketing CATS through press releases and PSA’s. In charge of contracting financial sponsors for season and selling playbill ad spots. Director of CATS Dance Company, a touring dance group comprised of “audition only” students. 

Kids Who Care – Ft. Worth, TX 

Director of Summer Dance Camp Program for theatre school. In charge of hiring a variety of dance professionals including an African Dance Instructor and a dancer from the Dallas/Ft. Worth Ballet. Created curriculum and schedule along with instructing dance classes with an acting approach emphasis. 

Dallas Children’s Theater – Dallas, TX 

Taught an introductory dance class to at-risk children ages 5-7 at Ben Milam Public School for the after-school program. Class was taught once a week and a final performance took place on Dallas Children’s Theater Equity Stage. 

Junior Players – Dallas, TX

Junior Players is an organization that places theatre instructors in “At-Risk” schools. Instructed three acting classes a week at The Classical Magnet School and Dealy Montessori.
